Operation Mongoose-

1oddday — Nov. 30th 1961— JFK authorizes top secret ”Operation Mongoose”, also known as The Cuban Project, — a secret operation sanctioned by the U.S government to help Cubans overthrow Fidel Castro’s Communist regime. The operation was run out of JM/WAVE, a covert U.S operations and intelligence station in Miami, Florida, and led by U.S Air Force General Edward Lansdale and William King Harvey of the CIA.

Operation Mongoose wasn’t the first U.S covert operation attempting to halt the growth of communism in Cuba. The first was the more notable, failed Bay of Pigs invasion of April 17, 1961. The failed invasion fueled President Kennedy to form a committee in May of 1961 to examine the causes of the defeat.

Operation Mongoose comprised of a series of top secret plans to end communism in Cuba. The proposed Project included psychological warfare, military sabotage, intelligence operations, and the proposed assassination of Castro and key political leader, and eventually having a U.S supported Cuban leader to take Castro's position

Decades later, declassified government documents on Operation Mongoose would not only further validate the existence of Mongoose, but also revealed that discussions were held on the topic of having Miami, FL bombed — Then blamed on Castro, in hopes to incite anger within the Cuban community of south Florida.
